About Personal Ads
Tips on placing and replying to personal ads
- Write a good ad. The number of replies you get from other members will depend greatly on the
quality of your ad or profile.
- Upload a photograph: People like to see whom they're writing to and as a result, profiles
with photographs get up to ten times more clicks as profiles that don't have one. Use a good recent
photo. Remember you may be meeting someone and you don't want to see that disappointed look on their face.
- For Service that don't allow photos. If the service you are using does not provide for photographs, then you should create
a public photo gallery where you can place it. You can use Yahoo's free photo gallery.
Then provide a link to it in your ad, if permitted, or send the address (URL) to a correspondent.
For example, this is the link to my photos: http://photos.yahoo.com/aserialpoet
Your photo should be in jpg format. If you don't have a digital image get one. Some photo or office service stores will
scan a photo of you for a small fee. Many offices have scanners that you might use. There is no excuse for not having
a photo you can send. Most respondents will require one before continuing to write to you.
- Title. Create a catchy title for your profile or ad.
- Tell about yourself, for instance: your likes and dislikes, things you enjoy doing,
what line of work you're in, what your personality is like, even your hopes and
dreams. The better your profile describes you, the more likely it is that others
will read and respond to it.
- Show - don't tell. Instead of saying you "like music, movies, and restaurants," offer specific examples.
Instead say something such as "like classical and rock music, action movies, and
Italian restaurants."
- Be creative. Make your ad stand out by including a special quote or
describing your most intriguing feature or most memorable experiences. If you
have a sense of humor, don't just say so.
- Don't lie. You are better off telling the truth in your ad. Honesty can
prevent disappointment for both you and your potential date. Just remember -
you could end up meeting someone who reads your ad, so don't say you're 110 pounds
if you're really 160 pounds.
- Don't write your life history. Write enough about yourself to catch
someone's attention. Don't include detailed, personal information.
- Never include your address and phone number in an ad.
If you decide you want to give out personal information in
future correspondence, be sure you're giving it to someone you can trust.
- Use an anonymous e-mail service such as Yahoo
or Hotmail.
Never use your real e-mail address with a personal ad service or
when responding to an ad. Once you feel you can trust someone, you
may give them your direct e-mail address.
- Instant Messenger. Some of the services offer Instant Messenger services, but most do not.
Once you have met someone, you may want to use a free public Instant Messenger service. You can
get a free account at AOL,
Yahoo, or
MSN. You can use these services to chat with someone
without giving them your telephone number. It's also free and you can chat with someone any where
in the world.
- NetMeeting - This is a free Microsoft service that enables you to not only instant Message a person,
but you can also talk to them if your computer has audio (speakers and microphone), or you can
even have a video conference with someone if you have a webcam on your computer. great way
to visit with friends and family who live far away.
