With a movie premiere feel, Hustler Casino opened it's doors to the
public tonight at 7:30 (okay, 7:33). Everything you've heard is true, and
then some. As I walked in I realized that Hustler is hands down the nicest
looking poker room I've ever been in. The room is doughnut shaped with the
smoking patio (with about 4 tables) in the center. First thing I did is
hang a right and follow the circle around the place. The first table I
came across was a 3-6 stud game waiting to go. I grabbed a seat which led
to...
"Oops!"
As you can imagine there's going to be glitches and some mistakes on
opening night of any new business. As soon my game filled up the dealer
called the floor and told him he need a set of cards. The floorman brought
over a set and the dealer proceeded to check the decks. The first deck was
missing the As 2s and the 3s. Oops! FLOORMAN!
"Oops! Part II"
So the floorman brings over a new set of cards and this time one of the
decks has too many spades. It is soon discovered the extra spades are from
the other deck and this error is easily corrected. Ante up and we're off.
First hand is won by L.A. low limit stud player A.B., with an Jack high
straight. Congrats A.B.
"Soups On"
While I didn't try anything from the menu (I'm not sure if they were
serving menu food anyway), they did have a very nice buffet with some
duck, sushi, shrimp cocktail, etc. The little food I did have was pretty
good. Based on the high class feel of this place, I can't imagine them
serving bad food from the menu. I'll have to try something the next time
I'm there.
"Celebrity Watch"
Well, I must admit, I wasn't concentrating on spotting too many people,
but I did do a double take when I saw actor and poker buff Dick Van Patton
playing in a 15-30 Omaha8 game.
"The Action"
Well, it was opening night so the sky's the limit. I'd be interested in
seeing if any of this action stays. I left around 9:30, but I saw them
spreading a 40-80 stud game, a 80-160 stud game and a 100-200 hold 'em
game. I think there was also a 5-10 pot limit game. Then of course there
were the rumors of the $1500-$3000 stud game. I didn't see that game, but
I heard it was going to go. Of course they had the usual selection of low
limit games starting at 3-6. They also have some California Games, but as
I'd never be caught dead playing one of those games I didn't get a chance
to check them out.
"Oops! Part III"
I had been playing in the 3-6 game for about an 1 1/2 hours when the
floor comes over and asks the deal "Are you collecting a 50 cent ante?"
The dealer says that she is and the floorman instructs her that the ante
for this game is $1!!!! Being that I was planning on leaving anyway and I
hate playing in a low limit game with an ante this high, I cashed out +76
and decided to leave.
"The Gift Shop"
On my way out I decided to check out the gift shop. First thing I
noticed is that they actually had "gifts". Oh sure, they had the usual
crap you'd find in a casino gift shop, but they also had some really nice
items (some really cool ties). And of course the magazine rack had just
about every one of Larry's magazines, including "Busty", "Hometown Girls"
and everyone's favorite, "Barely Legal". Nice touch, Larry.
"Final Comments"
The place is absolutely beautiful. It seemed more like a top notch
country club rather than a card room. I highly recommend it and I'll
probably be there again tomorrow to get a better look at the place. If you
weren't there tonight you should definitely check it out.
